Don’t Let’s Start - They Might Be Giants

The year was 1988 when I first heard this song.  I went and bought the cassette single version.  It has three other songs on it as well (One of them being We’re The Replacementswhich, is another great song).

I recall introducing TMBG to my friend who introduced me to bike racing.  We’d ramble around Northern Illinois in a bike shop van…cranking They Might Be Giants.  I’m not sure what people thought when we’d show up at a race (actually, I think they thought “Crap, Shawn is here again, I hope it does not come down to a sprint”…ya see…Shawn was one of the only Cat 1s in Illinois at the time, back when it was very difficult to be a Cat 1.  They also thought “Who is that scrawny slow junior kid with him”?  Which I was/am.)

TMBG got a bit too campy for me in the 90s but I can always go back to this song (and the songs on the single) and crack a goofy smile.

Just remember:

No one in the world ever gets what they want and that is beautiful…

…Everybody dies frustrated and sad and that is beautiful”
