Lush - Sweetness and Light
It seems as though there is some sort of resurrection in shoegaze music. I think this is great (however, the term “nu-gaze” is less than desirable) but it makes me think of the old days.
The first shoegaze band I really fell in love with was Lush. Of course I love My Bloody Valentine but wow…there was something about Lush. My freshman year at college I was a late night DJ (3 am to 6 am) and the morning after my show in walked Emma and Miki for an early morning interview. They were the sweetest ladies I had every met in the music scene. Of course, they were the only ladies I had met in the music scene. I talked to them for a few minutes and got their autographs. The 18 year old boy was starstruck by the ladies with their dyed hair and black leather motorcycle jackets. Yup, I had a crush on Miki…
…anyhoo…I think Sweetness and Light is quintessential Lush. A perfect shoegaze song. It is still beautiful to me 20 years later. In the mid-90s Lush kind of stepped away from their shoegaze roots when the released the single Ladykillers. A lot of people were not too happy about it, but at the time it made sense for them. Shoegaze or not…those ladies were/are punk rock to the bone and they could/can do whatever the fuck they want.
